Why Bird is so Bird-ilicious?
I tend to come here when it’s pouring with rain outside, I have no idea why, perhaps when I’m in Brooklyn it always rains? Although when I’m in London or even the Caribbean it also rains, so go figure? Bird is just a cozy and comfortable shelter, not just that though, there are other reasons I love this Brooklyn boutique:
. Jen Mankins, the shop’s owner and buyer has got a great eye and picks up the best pieces from all the great designers: Rag & Bone, A.P.C., Acne, Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Steven Alan, Tucker, Suno, Thakoon, Edith A. Miller
. she also carries the best fashion accessories such as Repetto pumps, Sarti scarves, Proenza Schouler bags, Ancient Greek Sandals and many others
. her Williamsburg store features exhibits, so you can enjoy a bit of museum time while shopping
. all her stores (three in Brooklyn) are LEED certified!
Porridge!
This is my favorite breakfast, if not ANY meal! If I’m hungry after my green juice, or if I know that there’s a crazy day ahead of me and I need a good base, I like to start with this warm and filling dish.
At the grocery store I buy the rolled oats that are pre-packed and divided into small sachets (each contains around 25g of oats), I like ‘The Whole Foods Market’ brand, ‘365 Everyday Value’. I use the same sachet it comes with to measure my filtered water (approx. 180ml). I always add a table spoon of milled chia seeds to help with my running and I also like to add half a tea spoon of manuka honey for sweetness, especially if I’m feeling run down. Bring it all to the boil and simmer for about 4 minutes or until it’s thickened to your liking, you can brush your teeth in the meantime.
I also like to add walnuts, they are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, a vital body nutrient that is rare in our every day diet, but mainly because I love the taste!
I like to change it up some days (woohoo!) by adding antioxidant blueberries or a nectarine or plum.
Go crazy with the porridge!
