Sm-Ash-ing Teeth

On another of your adventures, hiking in the woods, you can actually use wood ash to brighten your teeth. Not sure if that’s what I usually worry about, when I’m running out of water, but just so you know, in case you have a ‘hiking date’ emergency.

But at home, in NYC, where camping and bonfires unfortunately aren’t on my daily agenda, I use Smart Ash.

Yeap, it’s ash from the earth, that actually cleans and whitens your teeth, and it works magic. It’s super safe and natural, organic, GMO free, vegan and you can use it when pregnant and breastfeeding.

Another beauty product on my top ten list. Hello smAshing teeth!

Best Hikes: Boiling Lake, Dominica

Hiking is another form of meditation for me. There’s time aplenty for contemplation, especially on our long hikes. Just being out there in nature is so liberating, yet comforting and truly grounding.

It’s also exercise at its best. National Geographic magazine research has proved, that people who live the longest, are the ones who are active within nature. So get those boots on and let’s get cracking.

My favorite hikes aren’t actually about the finish line, they’re about the journey.

This particular hike is obviously a slight exception, as there’s a lake that boils at the end! You can’t beat that one, but the journey here is truly special too: the ‘Valley of Desolation’ a large portion of this hike, feels like being on a different planet, so quiet, only bubbling streams. It almost gives you chills, like something is about to happen. A warm pool dip and a clay mask are mandatory, so is exploring the different colors of water and fumarole (opening in the earth that allows gasses to come up) vegetation.

In My Pilot Bag

#adventureissue

I can’t believe I’ve been flying for almost three years now, time flies, literally! Soon, when I’m able to leave my baby for a little more than a couple of hours, I’ll be back at it properly. Oh, I cannot wait! For now, my training is with a little toy airplane, using my baby as a runway called “Mike-India-Lima-Oscar”. My baby boy seems to love it when our Skyhawk toy plane performs touch and goes, don’t ask me why?!

When I did my first solo flight a few months ago, it was one of the best, yet terrifying, feelings, I’ve experienced. I remember when I was taking off for the first time, thinking: “Shit, I really have to land this thing now.” There was no-one else on board to help.

No matter how much you practice and study, or how many hours you spend with the instructor, it’s a real moment of contemplation when you’re up there alone, no one else to rely on for help. If there’s an engine failure, you and only you are the one who has to deal with it.

On my third solo landing, my confidence had kicked in and I felt like I could do anything! This was the time when I had to be extra careful, this is when people make mistakes. I was also pregnant on first solo flight, so that definitely added to the whole stress.

Up there, in the fluffy skies, everything looks reachable, the world is at your feet, it’s a gorgeous little puzzle down there, it’s truly breathtaking. As Leonardo DaVinci said: “Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward…” I feel the same. Once I put my feet on those pedals, left hand on the yoke, right one on the throttle and do the radio call: “LI Tower, eight seven hotel foxtrot, ready for take off, runway two four”, I’m at my happiest. I feel so cool, free, safe and full of energy and excitement. It comes so naturally these days that, when I drive a car I tend to use pedals to turn instead of a steering wheel. It’s really bad- my husband refuses to drive with me these days.

As flying is one of my own most exciting adventures, I thought I’d share what I carry in my pilot bag in this month’s #adventureissue.

Here we go:

New York Sectional Chart, Jeppesen book to study everything I need for becoming an instrument commercial pilot, the most amazing Bose A20 Aviation Headset, Skyhawk Operating Handbook, Skyhawk checklist that I always bring into a cockpit, Dolce & Gabbana aviators, of course, flight computer to do my flight planing and my pilot log that includes all the flights & hours I’ve flown. All this goes into my camouflage Pilot bag.

The Breastfeeding Adventures

I’ve been lucky enough to breastfeed exclusively for the past three months, but, oh boy, I wanted to quit many times.

Here’s what I’ve learnt so far on my breastfeeding adventure. I wanted to share some of my ‘downs’ and report, that there are ‘ups’ along the way and it will, eventually, feel like the most amazing and special thing you and your baby can share. But, as with everything else worthwhile, it’s a bloody hard work!

There is so much pressure and so many different theories. How should I breastfeed? How long should I breast feed for? It all just adds to the challenges.

So here’s my story:

The Summit Bombs

I call these my summit bombs, as they are full of explosive energy and plentiful in good fats and sugars. Their main ingredient, bee pollen, is truly special, it will carry you too at least two summits at a time.

Bee pollen is a marathoner’s genuine ally, we take it for endurance. It contains vitamins and minerals aplenty, it also has all the essential amino acids. People who eat it regularly, seem to live longer, healthier lives.

I make these before every hike we do, and they must be pretty tasty as we’ve had squirrels comfortably munching on these, sitting next to us while watching the sun go down over the Grand Canyon.
